What is a HbA1c test?
HbA1c is a blood test that reflects average blood glucose over roughly the previous two to three months.
What it measures
The test measures the percentage of haemoglobin with glucose attached. A clinician interprets the result using your health history, current treatment and other glucose measurements.
Why it may be ordered
HbA1c may be used to support diabetes screening, diagnosis or longer-term monitoring when a qualified healthcare professional considers it appropriate.
How to prepare
HbA1c itself generally does not require fasting. If other blood tests are collected at the same appointment, their preparation rules may still require fasting, so confirm first.
